Statistics on Adults Returning to College

Statistics on Adults Returning to College

Due to the economy these days, and the huge number of newly graduated youngsters, the job market is a fierce competitive monster to be reckoned with. Many older, more experienced, adults are using a return to school to add extra armor to their resume in an attempt to come out on top. But the process of making that return can be a long arduous fight all on its own.

Textbooks

Most employees over 35 have disadvantages they must tote along with them through their returning education years. They have families to care for, financial instability due to unemployment, or they contend with their unsatisfying job that they must cling to for dear life until they are able to earn that certification that will allow them to advance onto something greater. Battling all of these added troubles can be tiresome, but if you want something better for yourself, you have to make sacrifices.

Textbooks

Now, it seems that many older adults are returning to college and deciding to make those sacrifices. Some find ways to squeeze schooling into their already hectic lifestyle by waking up before dawn to study, or attending weekend, or online classes. Some other adults returning to college will take on a full workload during the day and then attend classes afterward for some nighttime college schooling.

Student admissions over the age of 35 have climbed in numbers, especially in the last 10 years. Adults returning to college now make up almost 20% of enrollment these days, which is double what it used to be when they were the young 18-year-old demographic. These days two in every five college students are older than 25.

Online colleges have become the best ally to older adults who wish to progress in the competitive workforce. About 75% of colleges offer online courses in the U.S. alone. The University of Phoenix Online boasts 63,000 students attending already with numbers rising. Adults returning to college to finish a bachelor's degree or earn some type of certification tend to gravitate towards these types of methods because it allows them to attend a class at home while watching over their children, or allot their time given for school in a more convenient way.

The numbers on adults returning to college is on the rise, and it doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Soon, the income gap between college graduates and non-grads will grow even larger and education will be more important than ever.

Self-Instruction - Learn Tibetan Your Way

For students who want to learn Tibetan, one of the least preferred options is self-study. This is probably due to the complexity of learning the language. In most cases, students prefer to find a mentor or an institution that will guide them as they learn. Nevertheless, references that can be used to enhance language skills have been proven effective in improving learning curve. So if you're a student who needs more experience in understanding Tibetan language, then here are some examples of reliable learning materials:

Textbooks

Modern colloquial Tibetan conversations

Textbooks

One of the most effective ways in learning another language is to observe how native speakers communicate with each other. The True Cost of Textbooks

The True Cost of Textbooks

We all know that textbook costs are increasing on campuses, and the distance between the price offered for a textbook via the buyback price and what that book is then sold to another student at is growing. However, there are two factors that many do not consider when purchasing a textbook.

Textbooks

The first is the actual cost of the textbook. For most students, when they buy a new book, they are spending an immediate 0 - 0 (sometimes less or more - I have seen some books as high as 00). This is an immediate cost to the student, but when you consider, if that money was used for something else, there is an opportunity cost. A student who buys 5 books in a semester could easily spend 0 to 00.

Textbooks

For the average student, working part time, earning (an above average wage of per hour), this means that the student will net 0 per week, or 0 per month. However, after taxes (in most areas), the student will bring in 0 - 0 per month. Therefore, the cost of textbooks - in the immediate sense - is almost two months of wages. This means, that if a student could avoid the costs of these textbooks, they would be able to in essence not work for two months and focus on school.

For most students however, they do not have access to this kind of money, and many students choose (even if working) to finance their textbooks with student loans. The problem with financing textbooks with student loans, is that these book costs have to be repaid in the future. When you repay student loans, the student is in effect repaying up to three or four times the purchase price of the books. Meaning, that a 0 book actually costs the student 0, and a 0 book actually costs up to 0!

On average a student takes about 44 classes to graduate, necessitating a minimum of 1 textbook for class, or 44 books. This means the student pays ,400 to ,800 on textbooks. If financed with student loans, the student will actually pay ,200 to ,400 for textbooks while in college!

Of course, this does not take into consideration the opportunity costs of the book, the lower grades a student receives while working in college, or the stress of being broke, or the investments that a student could make with this money (if it weren't spent on books), or just having money to "blow off steam".

The second factor to consider with textbooks is the environmental cost. Textbooks are printed on paper, and when using basic averages (computed at eHow Facts.com ), it is figured that a campus with 10,000 students has the equivalent of 1,680 worth of trees being carried around in their backpacks. Given the ever decreasing "shelf life" of the average textbook - the life before a new edition is released and required for purchase - the amount of new trees required to be cut down to fill this demand is depleting our natural resources.

Students can also swap their textbooks using a website that will allow them to meet up and exchange their books using the company's patent-pending software.

When is the Best Time to Buy Textbooks?

When is the Best Time to Buy Textbooks?

The issue of purchasing textbooks is like many things in life an issue of timing and risk analysis. If you wait until the class starts (your safest approach because you might drop the class) you risk on missing out on all of the used copies of the required book, both in the university bookstore, and online. If you buy the book too early, you may lose out because you may drop the class. As always the issue is one of timing. If you plan to purchase a used copy of the book at your school bookstore (something I do not advise) then you have to wait until the first week of the new semester, since most university bookstores do not put books out before that time.

Textbooks

If you are planning on looking for a deal for your book online, you have to expect at least a week and a half for the book to be shipped, so if you are expecting an assignment on the first day of class, then you will need to either share with a friend, or use the library reserve copy. You can always choose to pay for express shipping, but that tends to nullify much of the savings you'd otherwise have. Also, note that price comparison sites tend to display the price of the book with the cheapest shipping.

Textbooks

As far as the best time to buy the book in order to get the best deal I would recommend buying the book 1-3 weeks before the start of the class. This should ensure both that you get the lowest price (because you will get the cheapest books before they are sold out) as well as giving you enough time to receive the book in the mail. You may still drop the class but in that case you could always sell the book the next year or semester.

Another important thing to note about looking for the best price for a book on price comparison sites is that many of the price comparison sites archive their results in order to speed the search. This greatly diminishes the quality of the returns, and makes it very difficult for you to find an up to the minute deal. At We Compare Books every search you do is live, and although this may lead the search to be a bit slower this is the only way to ensure that you are getting the most accurate price information.

The Basic Facts About Eczema

The Basic Facts About Eczema

Medical textbooks refer to eczema as "the itch that rashes."

Textbooks

That's because one of the basic facts about eczema vs. infection is that eczema rash only appears after you scratch your itch. In the highly unlikely event you never scratched, soaked, heated, rubbed, or even touched your itchy skin, eczema would not cause a rash.

Textbooks

Technically, the medical term "eczema" refers to a crusty, dull (seldom shiny except in infants) red rash. Eczema is caused by an underlying condition, a common skin irritation called atopic dermatitis. You can have atopic dermatitis without having eczema, but you can't have eczema without having atopic dermatitis.

What does "atopic" mean? Atopic conditions (also known as "atopy") are a group of diseases that tend to occur together. These include "allergies," not just skin allergies, itching, and hives but also respiratory allergies, especially hay fever, along with asthma and eczema.

One way to distinguish eczema vs. infection is the order in which symptoms appear in atopic dermatitis. Eczema symptoms include at least itch, followed by:

Red, irritated rash, followed by White scaly buildup on the skin (hyperkeratosis), followed by Thickening, darkening, and roughing of the skin when it heals (lichenification), followed by Altered skin color, followed by Scratch marks.

What does eczema look like on specific parts of the body? There may also be:

Eczema symptoms on hands including especially irritated skin and thickened, pitted, or ridged fingernails, Eczema on soles of feet featuring flaking, thickening, and cracked skin, Red patches on the tongue starting in the center and spreading outwards (geographic tongue), Eye irritation (conjunctivitis), Creases in the lower eyelid (Denny-Morgan folds), Enlarged lymph glands, and, in the very worst cases, Malnutrition, unhealthy low blood pressure, and shock.

People who have eczema tend to have skin that is dry, sensitive to irritants, pigmented with age spots or freckles, and tight, that is, with limited sagging and wrinkling. People who have eczema usually don't get acne.

An important part of eczema treatment is simply dealing with the weather. Age spots and freckles darken with exposure to sun. Dry winter cold aggravates eczema, although moist cool relieves it. Desert climates aggravate eczema any time of year. Moisturizers with peptides and ceramides are the first line of defense against low humidity.

People with eczema have to be careful around any household product designed for scrubbing surfaces clean. Dolomite in detergents and household cleaning powders can especially aggravate eczema. Be sure to wear gloves when using any cleansing powder around the house.

Skin color and skin type make a difference in how cosmetics interact with eczema-affected skin. Asians, Hispanics, and Blacks tend to have more rashes and more spotting of the skin, while Caucasians have more wrinkles and skin cancer. Asians, Hispanics, and Blacks with eczema respond better to oil-based cleansers, and should avoid any products containing hydroquinone.

In everyone's eczema skin care, moisturizer, creams, and facial waters are fine, but alpha-hydroxy acids and skin toners are a major no-no.

No one who has eczema should use skin toners, as these products contain drying ingredients. Instead of toners, people with eczema should spray the skin with a facial water and then apply a moisturizer. Vichy water (which contains sulfur) and La Roche-Posay water (which contains selenium) are a little more expensive but contain anti-inflammatory minerals.

Where Can I Rent College Textbooks?

Where Can I Rent College Textbooks?

Purchasing college textbooks can be almost as expensive as paying the costs of tuition these days. Most students are more interested in being able to eat than in having pretty, glossy pictures to look at and are asking the question, "Where can I rent college textbooks?"

Textbooks

There are a number of options in answer to the question of renting college textbooks. Most people turn to the Internet to find their textbooks. However, there are a very small number of campus bookstores which are beginning to offer rental textbooks as well.

Textbooks

Most of the college campus bookstores which offer textbook rentals do not advertise this option. This means you'll need to ask someone in charge before assuming the stores will rent you books.

The easiest way to answer the question, "Where can I rent college textbooks?" is to go online to your preferred search engine and type in some variation on "college textbook rentals." You'll probably come up with over 15,000,000 hits.

Most of the major sites have a number of similarities beginning with the fact that the first information you'll need to provide the company is either the specific title of the book, the author, or the ISBN. Usually, having the ISBN is the surest way to guarantee you are getting the correct book for your course.

A number of these companies also offer a variety of terms for rental, from 30, 45 or 60 days, to quarter and semester time frames. Some companies will also provide a summer option for 55 days, or even allow you the unique opportunity of selecting your own return date based on when your course actually ends. This option does affect the rental fee however.

All of the major online textbook rental companies offer free shipping for delivery and return of the texts, but it can also have a little impact on the actual rental fee charged for the books, so pay attention to that.

If you're particularly eco-friendly, you can choose a company that offers to plant a tree or provide some environmental support for every rental that you make. Many companies also use eco-friendly packaging materials too.

What happens if I drop a course for some reason?

This is a good question and something that a number of rental companies have already taken care of, by offering you a 100% money back guarantee for any book returned within 30 days of renting.

Regardless of which rental company you decide to use, answering the question "Where can I rent college textbooks?" begins with getting onto the Internet and doing a little comparison shopping.

What Does The Theory of Evolution State?

What Does The Theory of Evolution State?

Most of us have been taught the theory of evolution since we were in grade school. So what does the theory of evolution state?

Textbooks

It basically states that all life came about accidentally (by spontaneous generation) and then organisms and creatures improved into new kinds of creatures. According to the theory this process took hundreds of millions of years (once the earth had cooled long enough to support life).

Textbooks

Is there anything wrong with this idea? Yes. There are numerous scientific problems.

Humans have never witnessed or even figured out how to start any kind of life. In fact, the very conditions needed to begin the simplest building blocks of life ( such as amino acids), would destroy life. That's right. The very conditions that are needed to even build minute building blocks of living organisms would end all life.

Then we look at the possibility of life coming together.

The probability that life could 'come together accidentally' is infinitesimal. So small is the likelihood, in fact, that it could never happen in billions of billions of years, much less a half billion years. Mathematicians have agreed that the probability is so small for the parts of a cell to be formed accidentally... that it could never occur, ever. It does not really matter length of time for it to occur.

Next is the fact that the fossil record supports other theories (like creationism) much better than evolution does. Why? Because all of the fossils that should be available to show the steps of evolution are missing. That is not to say that there are not fossils used to 'show evolution', such as the horse and the whale, but the problems with these two examples are massive.

The fact is that the fossil record is missing the very fossils needed to show that evolution is even possible (intermediate fossils).

And then the problem arises that there is no evolution occurring today. If evolution were occurring over the last few million years, why is none taking place today? There does not even seem to be a hint of it. (Evolution being defined as changes that lead to new and improved kinds of organisms and creatures.)

So, if there is no possible way for evolution to begin, the fossil evidence does not show that it ever occurred and there is no evidence of evolution occurring today, what evidence is there to back up the theory?

These were just three or four problems with the theory of evolution. There are literally dozens more. Most of what I was taught in school about the theory has been proven wrong... decades ago (Yet these same 'facts' and illustrations are still in our children's textbooks today).

There have been numerous scientific discoveries over the last number of years. It seems that these discoveries are not being kind to the theory of evolution. For those that look beneath the surface (of the textbooks and nature shows) evolution has some extremely serious problems. At this point in time, unless scientists can come up with some answers, evolution is more of a religion than science.

Students Helping Students - Trade Or Rent Used Textbooks

Students Helping Students - Trade Or Rent Used Textbooks

A new trend for recycling textbooks is to trade them online. There are several programs that making a space where students can trade. These websites are like bulletin boards where various websites list their ability to trade and students can choose where to go. Students can list books on their campus and can find them from anywhere in the country.

Textbooks

Most sites have been created to help students save money on the cost of new textbooks. When you list your books other students who haven't taken your classes yet can find the books they need. Generally, you will need to give your campus site and name for your local site or you may find it somewhere in your community. All this is available when you list your needs online.

Textbooks

One of the reasons it makes sense to trade books is that publishers of new textbooks bring out a new edition about every three years. Usually professors will go with the newer edition but in reality, the publisher doesn't change much from one edition to another. If you purchase it new, you're going to pay a higher price.

There area many different ways to cut the cost by trading. You can ask around to other students as well or you can look for them at a variety of social sites. For instance, MySpace, Craigslist, and Facebook have people who want to get rid of their used textbooks. Ask around at these places. Bookswaps at Campusbookswap is another organization that allows students to trade their books online.

Another idea that is new and that will probably catch is to rent your textbook. You can find sites online that will actually rent books for a very nominal fee. As an example, Chegg allows you to rent the book for the entire semester and they have an easy way to get your books and send them back. Their site looks a little like the Netflix site for videos.

One of the areas where most students may not think to look is their college library. Often there will be a copy or two of a current textbook that will be on display for students who don't have access to the book within the first couple of weeks. This is great way to find them too.

As more students find ways to get used textbooks some of the publishers are having challenges because they make most of their money through new books sales. In some situations they are asking college bookstores not to sell used copies of their textbooks and some college bookstores are asking professors not to tell students to buy books online. However, with the rising cost of new textbooks something has to be done. Each student has a right to get their books wherever they can find the best bargains.

College Textbook Rentals - How Much Can You Save by Renting Your College Textbooks?

College Textbook Rentals - How Much Can You Save by Renting Your College Textbooks?

Did you know that even during the last few years of recession in the United States college textbooks increased in price by about 25%? Because of this more and more people are seeking alternative means of finding those high-priced textbooks for a bargain. Many people are looking into college textbook rentals.

Textbooks

There are numerous textbook rental places online which offer discounts for renting textbooks. Many of these sites claim to result in savings of as much as 90% from what book stores charge for the same textbook. However, the amount of savings is very much dependent upon which textbooks you are renting and how long you will need to rent those books.

Textbooks

Medical textbooks and legal textbooks tend to be among the highest priced books to purchase or rent. If you shop around when looking into college textbook rentals, you'll be able to find deals even on these types of texts.

The vast majority of the textbook rental companies charge a rental fee based on the length of time you want the book. Most of the time your options are for 30 days, 45 days, 60 days, one quarter, or one semester. The cheapest rental fee is for 30 days, but most students will need the textbook for a full semester.

Remember, the actual cost of the rental is dependent upon the purchase price of a new textbook so it varies from book to book. The vast majority of college textbook rentals seem to run around the dollar mark until you get into graduate level texts which tend to be a little pricier -- probably because there's a smaller group of people needing these books.

Something else to look into with college textbook rentals is the cost of shipping and handling. Some of the rental companies will offer a discount when you place a large order. In this case, you and some friends might want to consider ordering all of your books from the same company together to take advantage of this opportunity.

Additionally, some of the companies have free return shipping and handling for larger orders or for orders returned prior to the due date. Most of the companies will ask you to return the books in the original box so you'll want to hang onto that.

If you do decide to go with a company that does not provide free shipping and handling on returns, remember that the post office and UPS offer a media mail which is a lot cheaper than regular mail. Media mail is available only when shipping books or other papers.

Renting Versus Buying

Renting Versus Buying

Many people get into the buying versus renting debate wondering which one is actually better. While there are scenarios where each one comes out as the winner, it all depends on your local area and prices. While it may or may not be the best decision, there are a number of advantages to renting that many don't consider.

Textbooks

The biggest advantage to being a renter is that you don't have to be responsible for damage that is caused by weather or other things in the house that might break because of these types of circumstances. If you need a new roof because of a hail storm, the owner is the one that takes care of it. It's not an advantage that you are paying the same fee month after month, but you also don't have to deal with calling repairmen and getting everything set up to make sure the house is fixed up properly. Part of your payment is for this service which frees up your time.

Textbooks

Your expenses as a renter are pretty much the same month to month. You don't have to worry about the months when the property taxes hit, balloon payments on a loan, changes in interest rates, or insurance premiums. You can make a budget and stick with it where as an owner you will have unplanned expenses that will hit at various points in the year.

For some types of renters like those living in an apartment or condo, you can get away from having to deal with yard work and landscaping. You could be a busy person who simply doesn't want to have to deal with keeping a yard looking nice. There are many renters who do not have to do this type of labor on their weekends.

You are free of the stress of fluctuating home prices or what your neighbors are selling their homes for. The thoughts of property value don't have to yet another worry in the back of your mind.

Five Simple Strategies to Help Your Child Improve His Reading Comprehension and Do Better in School

Five Simple Strategies to Help Your Child Improve His Reading Comprehension and Do Better in School

Sadly, when public school teachers assign comprehension questions to
a particular reading passage or chapter, they think they are using a
teaching strategy to help their students learn the content. WRONG!
Asking students comprehension questions determines whether students
know the answers to questions pertaining to the passage(s) they have just read. This is an assessment tool, not a teaching strategy.

Textbooks

Textbooks in content areas such as, science, history, etc. give
information. Textbooks are called expository texts. An expository text
presents information in the form of facts and concepts.

Textbooks

Typically, in lower elementary grades children are taught
comprehension lessons in a narrative text. A narrative text tells a story.
Children have trouble comprehending and completing assignments in
expository texts because we teach them to read and develop
comprehension skills in narrative texts. Therefore, when children start
reading to learn, rather than learning to read, they struggle with content
area (history, science, etc.) assignments.

When your child comes home with an expository reading assignment, sit
down with him and follow these five strategies to help him improve
reading comprehension and thus get better grades in school:

1. REVIEW THE TEXTBOOK AND DISCUSS HOW IT IS ORGANIZED

Each subject area textbook will be organized differently. Review with
your child how the textbook is organized. Spend time looking to see
what content is covered, how each chapter is organized, where learning
aids -such as graphics, glossaries, summaries, definitions, tables of
contents, and the index - are located.

Students unfamiliar with their textbooks look for answers only within the
written text. They are unaware that information can be found in other
places, too. Many students don't realize that the graphs, sidebars,
headings, and pictures provide answers.

2. READ THE TEXTBOOK ALOUD TO YOUR CHILD

Teachers usually call students together, get their attention, and read
narrative texts aloud. Because the teacher is modeling a reading
strategy aloud for narrative texts, children develop an ear for how stories
sound. They come to learn that stories have characters, settings,
problems, and solutions. However, teachers seldom read textbooks
aloud. Textbooks are usually assigned to be read independently. With
such little modeling reading these kinds of texts, it's no wonder children
are confused and cannot comprehend their textbooks and have difficulty
completing assignments.

If we want children to develop an ear for expository passages we need
to begin reading textbooks aloud to them. Point out that not all reading is
the same. For example, say, "I'm going to read this CHAPTER aloud on
the history of the Spanish Conquest. As I read, we are going to be
looking for information." This will make your child aware that this is a
different kind of text. Over time, he will begin to develop an ear for how
expository texts sound, and start using a different reading strategy for
them.

3. SET A PURPOSE FOR READING

Prior to reading your child's assigned reading passage, you and your
child need to read the assigned questions at the end of the passage. By
setting a purpose for reading, you and your child will be more likely to
recognize the answers when you see them in the passage.

4.TALK ABOUT WHAT YOUR CHILD ALREADY KNOWS ABOUT THE
SUBJECT

In order to learn a concept, we must attach it to something we already
know. Reading comprehension is closely related to prior knowledge.
Help your child become aware of any prior knowledge he has about the
topic in the textbook. This will improve his comprehension because he
will have a frame of reference for the new information he reads in the
text.

5. HAVE YOUR CHILD TAKE NOTES AS YOU READ

As you read the text together, have your child make notes about
important facts and concepts in the passage. This will help him answer
comprehension questions, as well as provide him with summary
information he may need later for reports and essays.

Reading is a complicated process. It will take your child several
sessions to learn these strategies well enough to be able to use them
independently. Guide your child through these five strategies each time
he has an expository reading assignment until he seems to have
mastered them. When he starts using these strategies automatically, let
him try working independently. You should begin to see noticeable
improvement in his reading comprehension, his assignments, and his
grades. In fact, you'll probably find that you now have an easier time
understanding expository texts,too.
